The Headless Arrow - Pt. 2

The Headless Arrow - Pt. 2

As Sawatant approached Patuxet (Plymouth) he came upon a group of Europeans building camp. This didn't break his stride for Sawatant had met Europeans before, even traded with them. He didn't speak their language but was an effective communicator. John Howland was the first passenger from the Mayflower to see Sawatant approach. He immediately stopped his work and stood frozen as the handsome native walked toward him with his arm outstretched holding his two arrows in an "x". Sawatant's demeanor put Howland at ease but he was unsure what the native wanted. Getting nowhere, Sawatant continued down the road. He passed Mrs. Brewster holding a young child next. He outstretched his arm with the arrows but Mrs. Brewster quickly turned away. Sawatant floated down the road unbothered but watched with nervous curiosity. Finally, a man came out of a make shift hut to greet Sawatant. William Bradford would soon be named Governor of Plymouth Colony but for now he was a scared, dirty and starving man about to negotiate his fate with a robust indigenous warrior.
